The Basant Tree takes its name from Basant Kaur — ਬਸੰਤ ਕੌਰ — a grandmother, an educator, and a woman who helped open the door to learning for girls in her village.

REMEMBERING BASANT KAUR

Learning begins
with someone who cares.

In the family’s account, Jagbir Inder Singh Brar remembers his grandmother and father as the teachers within their home. He describes Basant Kaur and her sisters, Pritam Kaur and Inder Kaur, as accomplished teachers of their time.

His grandmother spoke about a time when girls were often denied education. Her response was to teach — beginning in her own home.

THE STORY SHE LEFT US

When Basant Kaur started teaching girls at home, some influential villagers objected. The family account describes how her husband, Dr Sucha Singh, supported the girls’ continued education.

Five girls from the village later secured the first five positions in a state examination. Their achievement brought attention to Basant Kaur’s teaching. At a gathering in their honour, the family and villagers asked for a school.

The account recalls land being provided by the Maharaja of Faridkot and the foundation of a four-room school. The opportunity extended beyond one village to children in neighbouring villages as well.

Jagbir’s tribute remembers the many paths taken by those who learned from her — and the people whose contribution is much greater than the recognition they seek.
